Carl Stephen Nicol, 58, of Elkton, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014.

An Elkton man died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday night, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

Carl Nicol, 58, was driving south on Jacob Burner Road about a mile south of McGaheysville Road in McGaheysville when he ran off the left side of the road and struck a fence at about 8 p.m., police say.

Emergency rescue personnel tended to Nicol, but he died before a medical helicopter could arrive.

He was driving a 1997 Harley-Davidson.

Carl Stephen Nicol, 58, of Elkton, passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, as a result of injuries from a motorcycle accident. Carl was born on September 7, 1955. He was the son of Robert Alex and Illean Pearl Nicol, who live in Elkton. He was an avid golfer and family man who enjoyed traveling, fishing, boating, and the outdoors. He also attended Valley Church in Harrisonburg.

On November 18,1986, he married Ofelia H. Nicol, who survives. In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by sons, Gary Thomas Cupp and wife, Christy, and Joseph C. Nicol; daughter, Laura Ann Nicol and husband, Michael J. Faine; grandchildren, Tyler Cupp and Katelyn Ramsey; great-granddaughter, Isabella Grace; brothers, Kenny Nicol, Robert Nicol and wife, Angel; and sister, Sandra Phelps, and husband Tim.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Nicol; a sister, Kathryn Letizio; a nephew, John Nicol and a mother-in-law, Amparo Gutierrez.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m at Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Harrisonburg. The Pastor Merle Shenk will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service until 9:00 p.m.. Burial will be private on Sunday, August 31st, 2014, at Duck Run Natural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made for his son’s college fund.
