Roy Vinton Mater, son of Daniel A. and Jennie Ann Mater, was born in Coalfield, September 20, 1886, and after several years if ill health died, died Monday, February 8, 1954, age 67 years, 4 months and 19 days. His early life was spent in his childhood home community.
In 1906, the deceased graduated from the Eddyville high school in Iowa City, graduating from that institution in 1910. In 1909 he was married in Albia, to Mary Scribner. To this union were born two children, Dwight and Alberta, who survive their father. The mother, Mary Scribner Mater died in Oskaloosa, September 17, 1927.
After the completion of his medical studies at Iowa City, Dr. Mater spent a year of internship at the mercy hospital in Oskaloosa under Dr. Williams. From Oskaloosa he went to Wright, where he practiced medicine a short time, and in (1913-14) he moved to Buxton, where both in private practice and as a company doctor he valiantly served the needs of the people. At Dallas hospital for a few years and in 1922 he came to Knoxville at which time he started the Mater hospital on Montgomery street. he was head of the hospital and the last year assisted by Doctor Dwight Mater. In 1939 Dr. R.V. Mater and Dr. Vance Elliott supervised the building and establishment of the Collins Memorial hospital. Here he founded the Mater Clinic. His remarkable ability as a doctor and as a surgeon early established his name in the medical profession. Through more than thirty years of his medical practice in Knoxville.
Dr. Mater was marred to Frances Bittenbender, of Knoxville, December 23, 1928.
The deceased is survived by his widow, Frances; one son Dr. Dwight Mater and his wife and their four children; one daughter, Mrs.Vance Elliott and her husband Dr. Vance Elliott and their two daughters and many Aunt, Uncles and family and friends to morn his passing.
Burial was in Graceland Cemetery Knoxville
