Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company E, 1st New Jersey Militia on April 30, 1861. He served with his unit as it first manned the defenses of Washington, DC, then as it participated in the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign, where it was held in reserved. He was honorably mustered out of his militia service on July 31, 1861. He then enlisted in Battery B, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Light Artillery, being mustered in as a Private on September 3, 1861. He did his duty in the field for the next three years with the Battery, and was honorably mustered out when his enlistment expired by law on September 14, 1864.
