Louise Pope Awbrey

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, at Crestwood Funeral Home Chapel for Louise Pope Awbrey, 79, of Leesburg, Ala., who died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014. The Rev. Daniel Pope will officiate. Burial will be at Crestwood Cemetery. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge.

Louise was born August 29, 1934, the daughter of George Frank Pope and Veo Virginia Lovvorn Pope. She graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1952. She worked at Esquire Cleaners and Lad n Lassie Children's Clothing Store. She later attended and graduated from Cumberland Dental School in Birmingham and was a dental hygienist for many years for Dr. John Arthur. After her second marriage, she worked at and was co-owner of Crestwood Memorial Cemetery and Funeral Home.

She was first married to Neal Shirley, later divorced and married Joe Rattray Awbrey.

When younger, she was in many beauty contests and was Queen of Emma Sansom High School in 1952. Also when younger, she was an avid dancer and loved to do the "Twist" and the "Jitterbug."

She worked hard over the years, gardening and canning fruits and vegetables, and was always there for her friends and family when they needed her. She greatly loved her friends and family and was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Rattray Awbrey; son, Bruce Shirley; her parents; brothers, Edsel Pope and Doug Pope; sisters-in-law, Jimmie Sue Pope, Alice Pope and Doris Pearson; and brother-in-law, Nathan Pearson.

She is survived by her daughters, Gina Shirley Pineiro and Julie E. Awbrey; son, John C. Awbrey; grandchildren, Amber (Faheem) Najm, Andrea (Edem) Ablordeppey, Justin Wyatt and Alyssa Alexander; great-grandchildren, Lyriq, Muzyq and Kaydnz Najm and Josiah and Justyce Ablordeppey; sister, Mildred Butts; brothers, Frank Pope and Jim Pope; sisters-in-law, Sula Pope and Betsy Pope; brother-in-law, Venson Butts; son-in-law, Francis Pineiro; nephews, Byron Pope, Terry Pope, Darrin Pope, James Pope and Daniel Pope; nieces, Lisa Brasher, Pam Murphy, Katrina Hubbard, Kristie Shields, Tammy Haverland, Jenny Pearson and Leigh Ann Hester.

The family request no flowers be sent and donations instead to the Children's Leukemia Fund and Parkinson's research.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today and from noon to the time of service on Sunday, Aug. 24.
