Dwight Albert Mater, Son of Delilah Scribner and Roy, Vinton Mater M.D. was born on March 15, 1910 in Iowa City, Iowa. He passed away after a long illness at Mercy Hospital, in Des Moines on November 17 1980, having reached the age of 70 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Dwight spent his early childhood in Baxter, coalfield, Eddyville, and Dallas before coming to Knoxville, Iowa in 1926. He gradated from Knoxville High School with the class of 1928. He received his M.D. degree froe the university of Iowa in 1935 and went to Mary's Help Hospital, in San Francisco, California to serve his internship. He has practiced medicine at the Mater Clinic and Collins Memorial Hospital in Knoxville from 1936 to November 1, 1978 when he retired because of his health.
He has been active in civic affairs, served on the Knoxville community school board and was president of it; held a membership on the First Area XI Community Collage Board; served on many other committees and boards I Knoxville community. For his service he was honored with the Community Service Award in 1969.
Dwight was an ardent promoter of athletics in Knoxville and also an ardent vocal booster of Knoxville. He was a member for over 50 years of the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville; a past-president of the Knoxville Rotary Club, a member of Masonic Lodge and as a young man in high school a member of DeMolay; he was also member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Knoxville since a young man.
He served 41/2 years in the United States Army Air Corps and was discharged with rank of Major. Most of the time was assistant Chief or Chief of Surgery at Scott Airbase in Illinois and Lincoln Air Base in Lincoln Nebraska.
Dwight was united in marriage to Margaret Park on December 27, 1958 in Knoxville.
Preceding him in death were his parents, and his wife Helen Booth Mater.
Mourning his death are his wife Margaret of Knoxville, three sons; Dwight Mater, Jr. of Ripon, Wisconsin, Howard Roy Mater of Denver, Colorado and Tom Park of Chicago, Illinois; three daughters; Mary Lynn Albert of Hopkins, Minn. Sally Ann Mater of Phoenix, Arizona, and Nancy Park of Chicago, Illinois; one sister Alberta Elliott of Austin, Texas and one cousin Dr. W.C. Boden, who was raised with Dwight, of Sioux City, Iowa. Six grandchildren and other relatives and host of friends.
Services was held in the Union Methodist Church in Knoxville, Iowa. Officiating Dr. Leonard E. Denver
Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville.
