John Wernlund came to the United States arriving at New York on May 3, 1849. He first settled in Waukesha County, Wisconsin where he married Gaziena Westedorp in 1856. They went to Saint Croix County in 1857 locating north east of Present day Baldwin. They are said to be the first Dutch settlers in the area. They had 10 children: Cornelius, Johanna, Gerrit, William Fred, John Christian, Henrick Ernest, Gezina Aldya, Jennie, Hendlock, and Willem. Family lore says his grave was in an area of the cemetery that was later paved over. I do not know officially if that is true or not. His grave is not marked.
