B.W. Riggs was born in Gallia Co, OH, December 22, 1821, and died in Denver, CO, January 23, 1902. He lived in Gallia Co, OH, from childhood until manhood, when in 1845 he was united in marriage to Frances Cubbage who survives him.

They moved to IN about 1855, where he engaged in farming until 1862. He moved to Perrysville, IN, where he built a woolen mill, and later on was engaged in dry goods business. He was County Commissioner for a number of years and many improvements bear witness to his services.

In 1876 he moved to Danville, IL, where he had business interests, both as a manufacturer and a merchant. In the summer of 1878 he moved to Greenland, CO, where he purchased a general store. He was made railroad and express agent and postmaster, which position he held up to the time of his death. He was the oldest agent on the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. He also was County Commissioner of Douglas Co. for a number of years.

But his principal interests were in the mines of San Juan in the southern part of CO, and it was here his first illness came upon him in the form of sciatic neuralgia. He returned home and January 2, he went to St. Joseph Hospital in Denver for treatment. After 2 weeks he seemed to be on the road to recovery, when a sudden cold caused other complications to set in which ended a long and useful life. He never felt the feebleness of age until his dying day. He had the hopes and ambitions of a young man.

Mr. and Mrs. Riggs had 3 sons and 3 daughters: Charles, James, and Wesley, and Mrs. George Hicks of Perrysville, IN, Mrs. Harry Noble of Denver, and Miss Mary of Greenland, all of whom were present at the funeral.

After the funeral services at his son-in-laws, H. Noble, by Rev. Thomas Warner of Christ M.E. Church, his remains were interred in the Fairmount Cemetery, near Denver.
