Lanky, as he was known to family and friends, was the third child born to William Riley "W. R." Bingham and Sarah Ann Brady Bingham. His sister, Mary Jane, died of diptheria after 1860 and before 1870. His half brothers, sons of W. R. Bingham and Matilda Harveston Bingham were Asa Dayton Bingham and Bryant Lafayette Bingham
