During his retirement, Dr. McCune pursued his hobby of the history of the Civil War. He wrote four novels about this war. He also developed, with Dr. Benjamin Blum, a history of medicine in the Little Traverse Bay area, and wrote the chapter on medicine in the book titled, "Historical Glimpses of Petoskey. In 1993, he was the Grand Marshal of the Petoskey Fourth of Ju1y parade.

In his early years of practice William Stanley McCune was a surgeon, as well as a general practitioner in Petoskey, Michigan. He was down to earth and a good friend to many. In his later years he and Dr. Benjamin Blum were often seen having breakfast with their friends at Flap Jacks near Sheridan Street and US131.

Dr. William McCune retired from surgery and returned to his old
home in Petoskey in 1978. In 1975, after the death of his first wife, he married his former high school girl friend, Mary C. Dykhouse. They became active in the community.

He was presIdent of the Petoskey Rotary Club, a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church, and was a member of the Board of the Northern Michigan Hospital Foundation. He was an active member of the Walloon Lake Country Club and enjoyed golf for many years. For about 30 years, he had a vacation home on the north shore of Walloon Lake.

William McCune was survived by his wife and daughters, Carol, Cynthia, Barbara, and Mary. His brother, Allan McCune, preceded him in death. More about the good doctor's amazing life can be read in his obituary––along with a additional write-up. They are both at the Greenwood Cemetery Genealogical Website: http://www.gwood.us/

Note: One fact that does not appear in his newspaper obituary, is that in between all of his many accomplishments, in the 1940s, (prior to moving to Petoskey in later years) he practiced medicine for a short time n Petoskey, Michigan. The photo here is of a Petoskey business man, holding one of the few Petoskey infants delivered by Doctor McCune at Lockwood General Hospital. Many years later as a grown up, "the baby" (now grown) and a mutual friend and pianist, the late Pianist Blanche Chap, had the pleasure of visiting with Dr. McCune at a Staffords Christmas party at the Bay View Inn. Doctor McCune was delighted to meet her once again. He turned to Dr. Blum and said: "Nowtell me, did a deliver a winner, or what!" (That was the kind of man he was and an example of his enthusiastic positive nature.)
