Grace Jessop will long be remembered as Petoskey’s Librarian, Petoskey's first suffragette, and well known world traveler. At the time of her death she had traveled to India, Europe, Korea, the Holy Land, and during her final years, to Alaska. Many still recall seeing her photo in a 1950s edition of the Petoskey Evening News. She was riding a camel in the Sahara Desert.

Miss Jessop was the daughter and namesake, of Grace Waldo Jessop (b.1870) who taught school in Petoskey for over 44 years. Her father was Stephen G. Jessop of Ft. Wayne, Indianapolis and Detroit, Michigan.

Grace moved to Petoskey with her family at a young age––attended and graduated from Petoskey High School in 1920––then the Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. There she received her life teaching certificate, as well as her librarian certificate. She went on to teach elementary school in Rogers City, Kalkaska, and Port Huron before becoming the librarian at for many years at the Petoskey Public Library.

Miss Jessop was very civic minded and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Petoskey where for many years she sang in the choir.

Surrvivors included two cousins, Allan McCune and Dr. William McCune,
both of Petoskey, and several nieces and nephews. Stone Funeral Home handled the arrangements. The funeral was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Petoskey, and was officiated by the Rev. Robert Kyser. Interment is at Petoskey’s Greenwood Cemetery.
