College football coach, television personality, sports commentator. A native of Johnson City, Tennessee, he was coach of the Yale football team from 1948 to 1952. He also played for the NFL's Brooklyn Dodgers from 1932 to 1934, and was an assistant coach at West Point from 1943 to 1947 before taking over at Yale. He was also a panelist on the television series "Celebrity Time" in 1949 and 1951, host of the sports program "The Herman Hickman Show" from 1952 to 1953, and played the role of 'Jumbo Campbell' in the 1953 film "All American." He died in April 1958, at the age of 46, in Washington, D.C.
