Earl Gilleland Jr.
The body of Marine Pvt. Earl L. Gilleland Jr., who was killed on Okinawa on May 10, 1945, will arrive in Spokane Thursday. Funeral services will be held Saturday with burial at Holy Cross cemetery with Hennessey funeral home in charge. Private Gilleland would have been 21 had he lived 10 days longer. The son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Gilleland, E924 Sharp, he was born in Grand Forks, N. D., on May 20, 1924, and came to Spokane with his parents in 1931. He attended St. Aloysius' grade school and Gonzaga high, graduating in 1943. He was named to the 1942 all-city football eleven. He enlisted in the marine corps in May, 1944. He went overseas in December, 1944, and was assigned to an engineering battalion of the First Marine division.
