Elizabeth then obtained her master's degree from the University of Alabama. Her early work was organizing a group of women into a branch of National Congress of Mothers (later becoming the Congress of Parents and Teachers). Her work in Prattville with the Prattville School Improvements Association (later Prattville Parent Teacher Association) was so outstanding that she was elected to State President of the Alabama Parent Teacher Association for one year. After that, she was elected as Autauga County's Superintendent of Education where she served for ten years (1917-1927). Following that, she became a member of the Board of Education. Through the years, she was an advocate for a public library in Prattville and that dream became a reality on January 25, 1957, when Prattville's first public library opened.
Elizabeth had no children of her own but reared five of her nieces, two of which became teachers, Miss Elizabeth Steere and Miss Annie Caruthers.
