Educator Clare Dean graduated in 1919 from the University of Illinois with a degree in journalism. She worked for many years as a columnist and world journalist with newspapers in Chicago, New York, and in Superior. In 1935 she moved to Petoskey and operated a woman's apparel shop during the summer months. In 1937 she married Alba H. Dean in Detroit, and the couple made their home in Petoskey.
After marriage, Mrs. Dean began a teaching career and taught for many years at Pellston, Charlevoix, Petoskey High School, and North Central
Michigan College until retirement.
