Patsy was raised in Tarboro, graduated from East Carolina Teachers' College in 1936, moved to Speed and taught school for 35 years, mostly in Edgecombe County. She was an active member of the William Dorsey Pender Chapter of the U.D.C. and the Edgecombe Garden Club.
She played the organ at Speed Baptist Church for over 60 years, but was forced to give up the organ after she fell at home and broke her hip. After that, she developed congestive heart failure symptoms, and her health deteriorated.
Patsy married Hugh Shelton on Jan. 7, 1939. They had 4 children, Sarah Balkcum and husband Jim, Ben Shelton and wife Susan, and Gen. Hugh Shelton and wife Carolyn, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush. David and wife Claudette.
Sister, Mary Vanice Barnett.
She was honest, she had great integrity and she believed in being responsible. We were blessed to have a caring mother.
