Lorenzo M. Mason arrived on Michigan shores from his native Vermont in 1835. He was already a practicing attorney. He settled in the young village of Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan, where he quickly made a name for himself, becoming involved with business and politics, and purchasing extensive pine lands in St. Clair and Sanilac Counties. He was elected Port Huron village president in 1849 and was District Attorney. He was elected to the Michigan State Senate in 1843-44, and was re-elected in 1868. Lorenzo Mason located in Detroit in 1851-52 where he continued practicing law and was involved in other business investments and enterprises. At the time of his death, he was Vice President of the American National Bank.

Lorenzo married Charlotte Luce, daughter of Port Huron lumberman Bartlett Luce and his wife Sarah Janes Luce, November 10, 1838, in Canterbury, Connecticut. Their home in Detroit was located on Lafayette Street. He had gone to Rhode Island for his health but his "illness took a sudden and serious turn" and he died there. His obituary, published in the Detroit Free Press, August 7, 1872, noted that he was survived by his wife and two children (Charles and Julia). Histories such as St. Clair County, Its History and Its People by Jenks, and the History of St. Clair County, Michigan, Andreas Publishing, among many other sources, provide biographical details and note his many accomplishments.
