James Christopher Callery was born in Ireland, the son of Christopher Callery (1797-1847) and Mary Ann "Nancy" Duffy Callery Curtis (1804-1877). In about 1844,James came to the United States from Ireland with his brother Patrick Sarsfield Calley and their mother, leaving behind his ill sister, Ann Callery (1830-1847) in the care of his father.
Shortly after his arrival, James became a soldier in the Mexican War. After serving in the war, on September 20, 1848, he married Bridget J. Kelly, daughter of James and Catherine (Kindelan)Kelly, of Ireland, in Saint Peter's Catholic Church, Jersey City, Hudson County, New Jersey. On June 26, 1849, the couple welcomed their son, Christopher James Callery, who was born in Jersey City.
The family made their way to Pennsylvania and records indicate they originally settled in the Port Carbon area of Schuylkill County, where his brother and mother had settled. James and Bridget had the following known children, whose dates of death have not yet been discovered:
Matthew--13 August 1851
James --7 June 1852
Patrick--30 April 1855
Mary Ann--20 August 1857
On the 1860 Census, James and Bridget are residing in Ashland, Schuylkill County, PA, with Christopher and Mary Anne. The circumstances of the other children are not known. Another child, Thomas Francis, was born, 18 November 1861-24 December 1915.
In April 1861 upon the start of the Civil War, James enlisted and was made 3rd Sergeant, 16th Regiment, Company E, Pennsylvania Volunteers.
James held various local positions. He was the Commander for the Joe Hooker G.A.R. post in Ashland. He served as the District Deputy for the G.A.R. He was elected and served as secretary of the Ashland School Board. He was the assistant warden of the Schuylkill County Prison. At the time of his death, James was a Schuylkill County Commissioner.
James died at home in Ashland, PA. The funeral mass for James was held at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, Ashland, PA. Newspaper accounts indicate that James was interred in New Philadelphia (Holy Family Cemetery). Despite the efforts of several family members, his actual final resting place has not been able to be confirmed as at the time of inquiry, the cemetery records for Holy Family Cemetery were unable to be located by church staff. His wife, Bridget, is buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Ashland, PA as are his sons Christopher and Thomas.
