Petoskey Superintendent of Schools, Carl Spitler was born in Barry County in a rural area––what today is considered part of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Area. He was the son of Hiram Spitler and Sophronia Clever Spitler. At Northwestern College he earned a teaching degree and later, an honorary Doctorate of Law at Central Michigan University. He served the community of Petoskey, Michigan from the 1920s through 1958. Mr. Spitler pioneered the vocational program in Petoskey and the PHS Student Co-op Program. He was past lieutenant governor of Division 15 of Michigan Kiwanis, a past club president; a past commander of Ivanhoe Comandery, Knights Templar; and director and vice-president of the Petoskey Chamber of Commerce. In World War I, he served as a naval officer, and the taught one year in an Indiana rural school and served two years as principal of Hart High School in Michigan prior to coming to Petoskey. He was also instrumental in the establishment of North Central College. A former student said, "He was a wonderful man and leader. Once he listened to an idea I had and paved the way so I could accomplish a project the principal couldn’t approve. Mr. Spitler treated me as an adult, not a crazy kid with a hair-brained idea.” His biography in its entirety is available on line at the Greenwood Cemetery Genealogical Site; Greenwood Cemetery; Petoskey, MI 49770
