Dorothy Welch
Lake Asbury, FL- On July 18, 2014 a beautiful lady departed this realm to be with her Heavenly Father. Dot Welch, 80, of Lake Asbury, FL passed away at home in the arms of her love, her husband Ben. After 60 years together, side by side, they said goodbye.
Dorothy "Dot" Lynelle Lumley was born July 28 1933, Oak Park, GA to the late Rev. Ralph Lee Lumley and Annie Mae Lampp. During her time in Vidalia, GA working as a young surgical nurse, Dorothy cared for a patient who introduced, through letters to his grandson at sea during the Korean War, her future husband. Dot and Ben married Dec 12 1954. Over the next thirty years the family had the good fortune to travel and live in many places, including the Philippines. With a can of Lysol and fortitude to match, Dot's touch made each place, even hotel rooms, feel like home.
She was Christian and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church; an advocate for the young, including mission work at orphanages in the Philippines. Her smile and soft spoken nature put you at ease. Her hugs made you whole. Her grace and elegance encouraged you to stand a little taller. Dot (Lynelle, Mommy and Nanny) lifted your spirits. An avid reader, talented chef and seamstress, she enjoyed gardening and getting down on the floor to play with her children and grandchildren. Despite her extended illness or "condition" as she called it, Dot carried on through faith; vigorous and eager to celebrate, to learn, to listen and care. With her passing, she leaves behind a legacy of joy, hope and love.
Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Franklin Welch of Lake Asbury; children, Vanessa Ghelerter (Richard) of Atlantic Beach, FL, Ginger Welch Strickland (Steve) of Savannah, GA, Roseanne Welch Dye (Robert, deceased) of Lake Asbury and Jackqueline Hazel Welch Biles (John) of Lake Asbury. Brother and sisters, Annie Lee Rollins (Garland, deceased), Benjamin Lumley (Amanda), Francis Crooms (Benny), Christine McTier (Halton, deceased), Geraldine Smith (Carson), Rev Ralph Lumley Jr (Doyse) Elizabeth Pitts (James), Larry Lumley (Janice) and Belinda Raburn (David), all of GA. Sister-in-law Glenda Lumley and brother-in-law Herman Melton. Grandchildren Adam, Anna and Alex Ghelerter; Hunter and Shelby Biles. Dot was preceded in death by her parents, brother Thomas Watson Lumley and sister Wanda Faye Lumley Melton.
