Miss Van Ness was born October 22, 1902 in Petoskey. She taught history from the 1920s to 1962. She earned her Masters Degree in Teaching from the University of Michigan. Over thirty of those years were at Petoskey High School. Arlene was a colorful teacher who instilled a love in her students for both American and World History. Her sister Ruth VanNess Irish, owned the Ruth-Louise Beauty Shop in downtown Petoskey from 1940 to 1960.

Note: Arlene’s sister, Ruth VanNess appears: "In the Wake of the Topinabee,” one of the areas best and most popular local history books––an account of life in Northern Michigan told from the perspective of an early resorter (or what is now called, a "cottager.") The author, Arline M. Browne, was a childhood friend of Arlene and Ruth in the early 1900s, back when Mrs. Browne and her family came north by train––took the dummy trains to Walloon Lake. Later Browne's built a cottage at Crooked Lake on the Inland Water Way.

Note: Arlene’s sister, Ruth L. VanNess
