Franciszek Gajowniczek was a Polish soldier imprisoned at Auschwitz, whose life was saved when the Catholic priest St. Maximilian Kolbe offered to die in his place. Gajowniczek survived over five years of internment at Auschwitz and Sachsenhausen concentration camps, then spent the rest of his long life telling others - eventually the entire world - of the heroic act of love which spared him.
