Thomas the son of Vincent Bekiempis Sr. and Anna Bekiempis of Bayonne New Jersey enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on April 13 1966 in Newark NJ. In Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company A, 7th Engineer Battalion, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On March 28 an accident occurred during a mine training class near the Tuy Loan Bridge in the Hieu Duc District of Quang Nam Province. Twelve Marines from Company A, and one rom HQ Company 7th Engineer Battalion were killed; one Marine was wounded when an M-16 mine prematurely exploded. LCpl Bekiempis was one of the casualties he was killed by multiple fragmentation wounds.
