Samuel B. Thain was born in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia in 1806. At sixteen he went to sea on a whaling voyage and went around the world on the ship Chili. At thirty he purchased a ship and harpooned his largest whale in Conception Bay. The day before William Henry Harrison was inaugurated President, in 1841, Samuel left for Wilmington, North Carolina where (having sold his ship) he erected a shop for making barrels for naval stores which at that time found a good market in England and European nations with navies. In 1850, Samuel moved to Bentonville near Smithfield, purchasing a farm. After the Civil War he became an ordained minister of the Baptist church. He lived to be almost 95 years. He was survived by his second wife and five children.
