Joseph had a difficult life in Philadelphia. His mother raised him by herself, along with along his older brother Michael. Michael suffered from epilepsy and died at age 22. Joseph was sent to the Philadelphia Protectory for Boys in the early 1900's.
Joseph married Lena White about 1917 in Philadelphia. He was the father of eight known children, just like his father:
1-Thomas Michael Bowen 1918-1955 PA
2-Joseph Daniel Bowen 1919-2012 NJ first married Margaret unknown; 2nd marriage to Catherine Theresa 'Alda' Creasser
3-Anna Bowen 1921-1922 PA
4-John J. Bowen 1923-? [this John J. Bowen (June 8 1923-May 1987) is listed as John, Jr and therefore would not be Joseph's son; a relative listed John J. Bowen on a Familysearch tree as the Jack J. Bowen who also died in May 1987- although this obit may be referring to that same individual; 'Jack Bowen' was married to Eleanor Kelly Bowen Stockman (Dec 29 1922-March 23 2011) and father of Kelly Bowen]
5-Mary Ann Bowen 1925-1926 PA
6-Jane Bowen (1927-2016) married to Michael Joseph Logue
7-William J.(?) Bowen probably this William who seems to be the one who enlisted in the army in 1946 in Philadelphia; there was also William Bowen (June 5 1927- ? ) who enlisted in the navy in 1944, and William Joseph Bowen (Sept 20 1927-Nov 1982) who enlisted in the army in 1945 but he lived in Upper Darby
8-Baby Boy Bowen (1929-1929) PA
When Lena died in 1929, Joseph was unable to care for the children. Thomas was sent to St. Joseph's Home for Homeless Industrious Boys in Bensalem. John and Joseph were placed in St. Vincent's Catholic Home for Children in Philadelphia and William (Billy the Kid) was given to a foster family. Jane may have lived with relatives.
At one time Joseph worked for the Dupont Corporation at Carneys Point. At the time of his death he was a foreman for a roofing company.
He died in St. Luke's Hospital. His usual residence was 814 North Second Street. The death certificate listed no cause of death but stated that an inquest was pending. He was originally buried in Belvue Cemetery at H Street and Tioga. The cemetery was closed in 1951 for re-use. It is unlikely any of his children paid to have his remains and marker privately moved. He was probably buried in a mass grave in the Bellevue section of Philadelphia Memorial. (click on cemetery below for picture no. 4- Map)
*His mother's maiden name of Loughran came from his brother Michael's death certificate. Joseph's death certificate mistakenly stated 'German' as his mother Anna's maiden name. Son John was the informant. He gave the name of his own mother Lena's mother, Mary German.
[The informant on his death certificate was John J. Bowen of 530 East Cabot Street.]
