Religious Figure, Saint. Foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart. Born to a family of means, Sophie's older brother Louis attended Collège Saint-Jacques and took the time to educate his young sibling who proved to outscore him when he administered to her, the same examinations taken by him. Louis wanted to become a Catholic priest so he went to Paris to pursue his calling. Because of his young age at the time, he was ordained a deacon but returned to Joigny to await his maturation to the age of 21. Becoming a teacher in the village, he resumed the education of Sophie. After his imprisonment during the French Revolution he sought his ordination in Paris once again but this time brought Sophie with him. Through her brother, Sophie met Father Joseph Varin of the Society of Fathers of the Faith who wanted to establish an order for women. Under him, she took her vows and along with three other nuns, established the Society of the Sacred Heart (November 21, 1800). The order would eventually establish schools around the world. In 1806, now Madeleine Sophie, became Superior General of the Society. After her death in 1865, Madeleine Sophie Barat was venerated by the Pope Pius VI in 1879, beatified in 1908 by Pope Pius X. She was canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 24, 1925. Her legacy includes the Sophie Barat School in Hamburg, Germany; Barat College in Lake Forest, Illinois; Barat Education Foundation based in Chicago, Illinois; Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat Tribute and Memorial Scholarship at Oak Hill School in St. Louis, Missouri.
