The daughter of Earl and Grace Carney, Vernita was raised in Seattle; she moved to Alaska in 1960, living in Iliamna and Naknek. She moved to Palmer in 1985. Her family recalled: "Vernita loved to garden and was a wonderful cook. She also enjoyed camping and the outdoors. She was a very domestic person. She was known to be always helping other people and was very caring towards people."
She is survived by her husband, Tom of Anchorage; her mother, Grace Study of Seattle; a son and two daughters, a brother and four sisters, and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Carney, and a brother, Jack.
