Born in Carroll County, the son of the late Henry Harvey and Ruby Bethane Hall Hughie. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He lived his entire life in this area and was the owner and operator of Hughie's 5 & Dime store for 26 years until his retirement in 1973. He was a loyal and active member of First Baptist Church of Villa Rica as long as his health permitted.

In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by a sister Laurine Hughie Deal, brother Harvey Hughie, and two sons in law John Walter Smith III and Ted Bell.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Tant Hughie, daughters Kay Moon and Ann Bell, brother Ed Hughie of Douglasville, sisters Betty Hamm of Augusta, Mary Scott of Atlanta and Louise Robinson of Douglasville; three grandchildren, 4 great grand and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held in the chapel of J Hoyt Thomas Funeral Home. Military Honors and flag presentation by American Legion Post 143, Carrollton.
