Deputy Sheriff Jacob Calvin was killed in a single vehicle crash near the intersection of CR 300 West and CR 300 South while responding to an accident shortly before 10:00 pm.

His vehicle left the roadway and rolled over several times, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Deputy Jacob Daniel Calvin, 31, of Kempton, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2014, from injuries sustained in a car accident in the line of duty.

Born Dec. 31, 1982, in Lafayette, he was the son of Dan J. (Karla) Calvin and Penny L. (John) Williams Visser. He graduated from Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School in 2001.

Jacob served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Iraq. He worked six years in military police (MP). After his discharge, he graduated from Lincoln Technical Institute in 2009.

For the past two and a half years, Jacob has worked as a deputy for the Tipton County Sheriff's Department. He was said to be "living his dream."

Jacob was a member of the Kempton Volunteer Fire Department and was a trained EMT. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.), Masonic Lodge, and a past member of FFA and 4-H. He was also a member of the Flora First Christian Church.

Surviving with his parents are his fiancé, Samantha J. Hawkins of Kempton; paternal grandparents, Robert and Anna Marie Calvin; step-paternal grandparents, Richard and LaVerne VonAhrens; a brother Luke (Lea Andria) Calvin; a stepsister, Victoria Visser; a stepbrother, Zach Visser; and three nephews, Dakota, Evan and Emmett.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jr. and Carol Evans and Dave and Elizabeth Williams.

Visitation will be held Sunday, July 6, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School in Flora. Funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, July 7, at the school with Pastor Woody Slade and Pastor Steve Cole officiating. Burial with police and military honors will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora.
