US Congressman. He was a United States Representative from the State of Virginia. He was born one of nine children in Essex County, Virginia, to United States Representative John Roane Jr. (1766-1838), and his wife Elizabeth Fauntleroy Brockenbrough Roane (1771-1913), on October 31, 1794. He was educated locally, completed preparatory studies, and attended the prestigious Rumford Academy in King William County, Virginia, and Princeton College (now Princeton University), in Princeton, New Jersey, but unfortunately, he never graduated from college. Following his education, he engaged in agricultural pursuits and served his country with the rank of Private in the Fourth Regiment, Virginia Militia, during the War of 1812. He then entered politics and was elected and served a term as a Member of the Virginia State House of Delegates from 1820 to 1823. He also served as a Member of the Virginia State Legislature in 1830. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed his father the outgoing United States Representative John Roane Jr. (1766-1838), in 1830. A Member of the Jacksonian Party, he then served Virginia's 12th District (Twenty-Second Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1831, to March 3, 1833. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative William Fitzhugh Gordon (1787-1858), on March 4, 1833. After leaving the United States Congress he served as a Clerk in the United States Patent Office from 1836 to 1851. He lastly served as a Special Agent in the Treasury Department from 1855 to 1867. He passed away in Washington, D.C., on December 18, 1869, at the age of 75. Following his death, he was buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, D.C. He was married to Mary Magdalene Attulah Roane (1805-1890), with whom he had three children including Rose Atullah Roane (1823-1910), John B. Roane (1834-1877), and Samuel Roane (1846-1927). His wife Mary survived him and passed away in Washington, D.C., on September 28, 1890, at the age of about 85, and she was buried with her husband in Glenwood Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
