Mary Kathleen Townsend, 1917 – 2003

Jay L. Townsend, 81, Upland, died in the County Hospital on Wednesday. A retired farmer, he had been ill with the flu and suffered a heart attack at his home.
Born in Blackford County, he moved to Grant County in 1903. He was a former director of the Federal Land Bank Association of Grant and surrounding counties. He was the Democratic nominee for joint state representative from Grant and Blackford Counties in 1920. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and the Farmers Union.
Survivors include the widow, Blanche; three sons, Col. James Townsend, Bedford, Mass., George Townsend, Monticello, Ind., and Wayne, Upland; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Burks, Wood Ridge, N.J., and Mrs. Vida Pearson, Marion; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Saturday at the Oak Chapel EUB Church, east of Marion. Burial was made in the Grant Memorial Park, Marion.
