Merritt was born December 14, 1911 in Wayne County and was the son of the late Nereus & Annie Gertrude Elder Merritt.
He was a member of Chestnut Street Methodist Church since 1944, and a graduate from Burgaw High School in 1930. He served in teh US Army from 1942 to 1946. He was a charter member of the Lumberton Lions Club and was an avid golfer from 1949 until 1999.
He was employed at the Pastime Theater and the Carolina Theater, both in Lumberton from 1946 through 1949. From 1949 through the late 1960's he was employed at the Sir Walter Hotel in Raleigh and the Lorain Hotel, Redwood Motor Lodge and the Red Carpet Inn, all in Lumberton. In 1973 he retired from Allen Newberry Jewelers of Lumberton.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Wishart Merritt; two brothers, Swindell Merritt & Davis Merritt.
Surviving is a sister, Gertrude Merritt of Durham.
The funeral will be at 2:00 P.M. Friday at Meadowbrook Cemetery, Dr. Stand Smith Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
