On Saturday, September, 11, 199, Marilyn Dougherty, 72, departed this life after a valiant and courageous battle against cancer. Her passing was only three days shy of her 52nd wedding anniversary with her beloved husband, Dr. Thomas Dougherty.
Marilyn, the daughter of the late Floyd and Blanche Ruble, was born in Grove City, Ohio. She grew up there graduating from Grove City High School and continuing her academic pursuits at the Ohio State University, receiving a degree in Home Econimics. After her marriage on September 14, 1947, she began her lifelong devoted career as wife and mother. The family lived in Columbus, and had a tour with the U.S. Army in Austria in 1954-55, then returned to settle in Chillicothe, making it their permanent home.
In addition to being a wife and mother, Marilyn used her degree to teach physical education at Smith Junior High School. She was an enthusiastic and energetic supporter of the community serving as the president of the American Cancer Society-spearheading fundraisers to eradicate the disease that ultimately claimed her life. She also devoted numerous hours in volunteer work as a Girl Scout Troop Leader.
She had a zest for life which was exemplified in her love of horses. She showed them at the Ohio State Fair and in horse shows throughout the area. In later years her expertise was in carriage driving.
Throughout her life however, the foundation of all she did, was in her belief in God and her devotion to Him and to her family. That was displayed in everything she did and was manifest in all those whose life she touched. She was a stalwart in the church-teaching classes, leading Vacation Bible Schools, uplifting and ministering to those she came in contact with.
She will be remembered as a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a special aunt and as a friend to so many people.
Those who know her will always remember her effervescent laughter and irrepressible spirit all captured in an earthly body under a beautiful head of fiery red hair. That spirit, so long contained, is now released into the heavens to spread its glow.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Brenda Dougherty of Fayetteville, N.C.; daughters, and sons-in-law, Pamela and John Compher, of Lynchburg, Va., Jill and Brent Anderson of Chillicothe, and Jennifer and Bryan Ralls, of Rolla, Mo.; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jeanne Ruble, of Englewood, Ohio; grandchildren, Bobby, Kimberly, Eric, Mindy, Shawna and Zachary and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 14, 1999, at the Haller Funeral Home, 1661 Western Ave., Chillicothe.
A celebration of her life will be held at Haller Funeral Home at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 15.Interment will follow at Twin Township Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Butler Springs Christian Camp, 3701 St. Rt. 41, Hillsboro, Ohio 45133.
