Helen was born in Fremont, Ohio to John and Rosa Lucas who modeled for Helen the faith, integrity and good humor she was known for throughout her life. She was predeceased by sisters Matilda Maxwell and Wilma Bauman, both natives of Ohio. Helen moved to Portsmouth in 1941 with husband and fellow Ohioan Ivan Clayton Pat Myers, now deceased, her childhood sweetheart. In 1955, she and Pat built the home she lived in for the rest of her life and were charter members of Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Portsmouth. Helen taught youth Sunday school at the church for many years and remained active and engaged in the life of the church until her death. She was a member of Lutheran Church Women ELCA and served Holy Communion Lutheran Church in a number of leadership roles through the years, including HCLC president and president of the HCLC's Busy Bees women's group. Helen was also a member of St. Andrews Young at Heart, Beasley Senior Citizens Center, Churchland Senior Citizen Group and the Cedarettes.
A tireless volunteer, Helen was a contributor as well as a hands-on participant in the work of Oasis Social Ministry, Portsmouth Volunteers for the Homeless, Portsmouth Salvation Army, PARC and H.E.R. Shelter, to name just a few. Rarely idle, Helen enjoyed traveling, gardening, dining in or out and was an avid walker up until her final months.
While Helen had no children by birth, marriages to Clarence Griffin Ruffy James, who died in 1995, and John E. Fay, Jr., who died in 2003, brought her a large and loving family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whose lives she blessed. Survivors include beloved nephew Philip Sherick of Fremont, Ohio; niece Judith Smith of Marblehead, Massachusetts; children by marriage, Linda Fay Jaglowski (Richard); Jack Fay (Sue); Gloria Fay Didden (Wayne); Janie Hall and Krisy Nelson. Paul Jaglowski, Chip Didden (Allison), Karen Didden, Emily Fay, John Fay and a host of other grandchildren and great-grandchildren are left to remember her love and her legacy.
Entombment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens following the service.
