Royalty. Born the eldest son of Leopold V and Claudia de Medici. He succeeded his father upon his death but remained under his mothers regency until 1646. He was an absolutist ruler and did not call any diet after 1648. During his reign the Italian opera flourished at Innsbruck and rose to European importance. He married Anna de Medici (his maternal uncles daughter as well as his paternal aunts daughter) in 1646.
