Joseph A. Weigand, age 96, a lifelong resident of Naperville, IL, died Thursday, January 12, 2006 at Tabor Hills Healthcare Center, Naperville. He was born on January 9, 1910 in Naperville.
He is survived by a son, Joseph "Joey" Weigand of Naperville; three sisters, Genevieve Becker of Colorado, Mary Bruzewski of Colorado and Rita Mowry of Naperville, who lived with Joe and cared for him in his last years; and many nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn (nee Woods) Weigand in 1997; also by his parents, Walter and Susan (nee Schomer) Weigand; five brothers, Bernard, Lawrence, Richard, Carl and Walter Weigand; and two sisters, Dorothy Montour and Gertrude Bauer.
Joe was born at his family's home at 13 N. Main St. in Naperville, one of eleven children of Walter and Susan Weigand. He attended SS. Peter & Paul Grade School, Naperville and commuted by train to St. Patrick's High School in Chicago. Joe married his wife, Evelyn, October 28, 1933 and was employed with Lenert Heating & Ventilating Co., Naperville for 33 years. He was a member of the Naperville Fire Department for over 30 years, beginning as a volunteer and later sreving as a Fire Chief for eleven of those years, retiring in 1965. Joe was later appointed as a Naperville City building inspector. He was a lifelong member and usher at SS. Peter & Paul Church, Naperville and a 75 year member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight for several terms. Joe was known as a "walking encyclopedia of Naperville lore" and was a avid collector of Naperville memorabilia and history.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2006 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL.
A Fire Service Funeral will be conducted to recognize Joe's Firefighting career.Prayers will begin Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 10:30 A.M. from the funeral home and will proceed to an 11:00 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville with Interment at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Naperville, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials to: Little Friends, Inc., 140 N. Wright St., Naperville, IL 60540.
