'*.¸.*´ Thank you so much for those who have left flowers and tokens for my maternal grandfather. Your kindness is so deeply appreciated! Thank you so much!

Manuel passed away before I had the pleasure of meeting him. I have been researching his history and his family links for quite sometime. When you find something out about someone you've been researching it is such an adrenalin rush! I only have a few photos from my mom's side of the family due to a moving company losing boxes and boxes of personal items and photos when my family moved to Denver in the late sixties. Unfortunately, I have no photos of my mother's father to share.

During this journey my grandfather has taken me on, I found out that his father, Miguel Manzanares was full blooded Navajo. His mother was 1/2 Kiowa & 1/2 Spanish (a Spaniard from Spain was her father). Manuel was born in Espinoza, CO and grew up in the San Luis Valley. San Luis Valley is located in south central Colorado extending into the Taos Plateau of northern New Mexico. As a child I remember visiting the Great Sand Dunes many times just west of the mountains in the valley. How beautiful it must have been to grow up around these mountains that are partly dessert and partly snow packed.

manuel's father was educated at Santa Fe's Indian school where he also became a carpenter. Miguel became quite well known in the San Luis Valley as a skilled carpenter and a creative builder. He had four sons, Manuel was the oldest. Manuel was married to Dora (Lola, Delores) Maes. Together they had 7 children, all born in or around Leadville, CO.
