Edmund Jones volunteered to serve as a private in the American Revolutionary War – volunteered 1775 for service with South Carolina Salt Catcher Volunteer Company, Colleton County Regiment, under command of Captain James Jones
-----------------------------------------
Ransom D Jones purchased three separate tracts of land three different years between 1851 and 1858 in southeast Alabama. Alabama land records
indicate he purchased
-80.05 acres on December 1 1851, paying cash at the land office in Sparta, Alabama
-40.15 acres on July 15 1854, paying cash at the land office in Elba, Coffee County, Alabama
-235.48 acres on September 1 1858, paying cash at the land office in Elba, Coffee County, Alabama
Source: US Bureau of Land Management, Alabama Land Records, Alabama
Pre-1908 Homestead and Cash Entry Patent and Cadastral Survey Plat
Index, General Land Office Automated Records Project, 1996.
------------------
He purchased a total of 355.68 acres during a seven year period. One may safely conclude that a
man who could purchase about 356 acres of land in the 1850s, late antebellum era, in rural South
Alabama had plenty of cash. Thus we have established that my (our)great great great grandfather Ransom Jones was a landowner and more than likely a slaveholder.
-------------------------------
The 1880 US federal census finds Ranson D Jones, age 60, living in Geneva County Alabama
with his second wife Mary J Jones, age 44, born about 1836, and these children
Maggie Wells, age 14 – the census taker does not provide any relationship to head of household
James Griggs, age 13 – the census taker does not supply any relationship to head of household
---------------------------------------
The 1850 US federal census finds John Calvin Jones, son of Ranson D Jones and Lydia Alberson Jones, living in Coffee County, Alabama with his parents and the siblings noted above ---------------
The database for the National Park Service, Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, indicates
Ransom Jones served with the Choctawhatchee Rangers, organized at Geneva, Alabama, in
January 1863, during the War to Suppress Northern Arrogance 1861-1865. This roster includes his name plus the name of my paternal great grandfather, James Monroe "Jim" Fulford (1843-October 6,1909) who entered service and served with the same company as Ransom Jones. History and coincidence, not to mention love
and romance, often produce uncanny results through the centuries. Neither of these men
lived to realize that the great great granddaughter of Ransom Jones, Bina Elizabeth Barnes (1914-2004) and the great granddaughter of
his son, John Calvin Jones, would marry the grandson of James Monroe Fulford, Jim Frank Martin.
--------------------------------
Jimpsey McGowan, the commanding officer of the Choctawhatchee Rangers, was the father of
Clara McGowan, b. 1843 Decatur County, Georgia, who married James McKinney Vaughan. They were the parents of Daniel Vaughan, who married Anna Brandon. They were the parents of Willie D Vaughan (June 10 1891 - December 26 1970), my maternal grandmother, the mother of Bina Barnes Martin (October 25 1914- December 14 2004) Thus, in this one company, I find one of my paternal great grandfathers, James Monroe Fulford and one of my great great great maternal grandfathers, Ransom Jones, serving as
privates under the command of another of my maternal great great great grandfathers, Jimpsey McGowan. The fact that two of their descendants married each other reflects the reality that in the rural South in the 19th and early 20th century, up until the end of the World War II and the economic improvements that enabled people to replace mules, horses and wagons with horseless carriages, aka trucks and cars, men married a girl who lived in the neighborhood,
due to limited mobility.
