Lonnie J. "Jay" Ivey, Jr., age 93 of Hockessin, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Season's Hospice in the Christiana Hospital with his family at his side.

Born in Raynham, NC in 1920, Jay was the son of the late L.J. Ivey, Sr. and Frances H. (Britt) Ivey. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Catherine in 2012 and siblings, Cora, Clare, Johnnie, Bowman, Allene and Clifford.

He was honorable discharged after four years of service from the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Master Sergeant during WWII in 1945. He proudly served with the 61st Bombardment Squadron and was stationed in the US, Alaska and South Pacific. He was a flight chief in the South Pacific at the age of 24 and maintained 16 of the largest planes in the world, at that time, the B-29.

Jay retired from his family business as a contractor in 1985 and spent most of his time with his son, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, all whom adored him. He was also a member of the former Hockessin - Yorkland Lions Club.

He is survived by his son, Charles R. and fiancée Gail Cain of Newark, DE, grandchildren Carolyn Lusby and husband Joseph of Hockessin, DE and John C. Ivey and wife Patricia of Sarasota, FL, great grandchildren, Lauren, William, "JoJo", Matt, Ryan, Morgan and Mackenzie, and great great grandson , Christian.

His family would like to thank Karen Scalia, M.A., John Grellis, Warren Basher and S. Sgt. John J. Molinski of the U.S. Army Air Corps that saved Jay's life.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Jay's family will greet friends from 7 to 9 pm on Tuesday, May 27 at the funeral home. Interment will follow the funeral service in Glenwood Memorial Gardens, 3231 West Chester Pike, Broomall, PA.

In lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE, 19801 or the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
