Christine Anne Kupets, an 8-month-old Versailles girl awaiting a heart transplant, died Jan. 25, 2001, at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. The baby was born with cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and loses its ability to pump blood. Christine was the daughter of Thomas C. and Constance J. Kupets. Born on May 1, 2000, Christine's condition became apparent just seven weeks later. She was treated first at Lexington's Central Baptist Hospital, then transferred to the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. Doctors there stabilized her condition so she could be transferred to the pediatric heart center at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati. She returned home in July, but her heart function dropped off again and she was taken back to the UK Hospital at Thanksgiving. The UK doctors stabilized her condition, then sent her back to the pediatric heart center in Cincinnati. On Dec. 7, Christine was placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing waiting list. Christine's plight was the subject of a feature story in The Woodford Sun on Dec. 28 in which her parents described how their church, friends, relatives and employers helped them cope with their ordeal. Shortly after Christine's death, her maternal grandmother, Barbara Semler of Richmond, told the Lexington Herald-Leader, "Yesterday, she took a very bad turn for the worse. She suddenly just crashed and they brought her back." But, ultimately, doctors were not able to save Christine. Christine is also survived by her maternal grandfather, Philip Semler of Richmond, and paternal grandparents, Jim and Shirley Kupets of Rolla, Mo. A memorial service was held at 2 PM, Jan. 28, at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Lexington. Edgington, Mullins & Taylor Funeral Home in Winchester was in charge of arrangements. Contributions are suggested to the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center heart transplant program.
