He was born Nov. 12, 1924, to Charlie Franklin and Susan Lillian Coins Donathan.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and had been commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10343 in King for several years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Beatrice Conrad Donathan, in 1989. Also preceding him were three sisters, Thelma Turney, Louise Easter, and Pauline Baylor; and a brother, Howard Donathan.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Jay Donathan and wife Sue, and Timothy Leon Donathan, all of King; two grandsons, Bobby Lee Donathan of Raleigh, and Maxwell Leon Donathan and wife Abby of Lexington; sisters, Lillie Mae Cook of Pilot Mountain, Argie Sams of Mount Airy, and special sister, Inez Wall of Pilot Mountain; and a brother, Monroe Donathan of Mount Airy.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. A.G. Parker officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King, and other times at the home of a son, Jay Donathan (114 Deerfield Drive in King).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Aubrey Joyce, 2097 Brown Mountain Road, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041.
