She was born in Connecticut (most probably in Greenwich, Fairfield County) after her family fled from Manhattan while it was under British occupation during the American Revolutionary War. She was baptized at the [Old] Brick Presbyterian Church in Manhattan on 22 January 1784 after the close of the war and the reopening of her parents' church.

She died of "dropsy" at her home at 118 Third Avenue in Manhattan.
