Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a Greek-Ruthenian parish priest and nephew of Metropolitan Józef Sembratovych of the Archeparchy of Lviv which he would later guide himself, Sylvester Sembratovych received his education in Rome at the Greek Ruthenian College of St. Athanasius and the Pontifical Urban Athenaeum of Propagada Fide. Ordained priest there on November 1, 1860, he successively served as prefect of studies at the Greek Ruthenian Seminary of Lviv between 1863 and 1865, when he was named professor of theology, a position which he held until 1879, when at the age of forty two, he was appointed auxiliary for the Ruthenian see of Lviv, receiving his episcopal consecration on April 20, 1879, from his uncle, Archbishop Józef Sembratowicz. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Lviv and Halicz of the Greek Ruthenians on March 27, 1885, during his tenure, he reformed the Basilian Monastic Order, founded a new congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary reformed into the Basilian Sisters in 1897, published vernacular prayer books and celebrated a synod in 1891. Named assistant at the Pontifical throne on July 17, 1894, in the consistory of November 29 of the following year, Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest with the title of Santo Stefano al Monte Celio. He passed away in Lviv two years later aged sixty one.
