Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Pokuttya, presently a historical region, then part of the Austrian Empire, Mykhajlo Lewicki came from a family of small nobility. Receiving his studies in Lviv and Vienna, he was ordained priest in 1798, successively serving as professor at the University of Lviv. Canon of the cathedral chapters of Lviv and Łódź, aged thirty nine, Lewicky was appointed bishop of Przemyśl of the Ruthenians, receiving his episcopal consecration in Lviv on September 20, 1813. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Lviv, Halicz and Kamieniec of the Ruthenians on March 8, 1816, receiving the pallium on that very day, he took possession of the see over two years later, in May 1818. Named primate of Galizia and Lodomeria on June 17, 1848, ill health forced him to retire to the Univ Lavra of the Holy Dormition until then his summer residence. Elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals by Pope Pius IX in the consistory of June 16, 1856, when eighty one years of age, the Pope had his red biretta sent to him at the Univ Lavra, when he spent his remaining days and was also laid to rest upon his death in 1858.
