She was born Frances Caroline Calloway Bowie, named after her mother, and known as "Carrie" Bowie to her beloved siblings, relatives, and friends. After receiving the habit in early 1896, Carrie Bowie took the religious name, Sister Mary Ignatia. Sister Ignatia entered the Sisters of Mercy, Belmont, North Carolina Community (Sacred Heart Convent) on September 24, 1896.
    Although she was unable to continually reside in the Community for reasons of health, following her death on November 10, 1946 in Burke County, North Carolina, in accordance with her expressed wishes and with the love, support, and approval of her family, her body was taken to the Sisters of Mercy-Belmont, her beloved Community, where, clothed in her religious dress, Sister Ignatia was interred in the Community plot in the Belmont Abbey cemetery.
