Elmer James (E.J.) Storey
Elmer James (E.J.) Storey Santa Monica, CA Beloved husband, father, brother, and most treasured grandfather passed away October 16, 2007, two days prior to his 86th birthday. E.J. was born October 18, 1921 in North Ogden, Utah. He was the eldest of six children born to Ephraim Nathen Storey and Rosetta Fuller Storey. He spent his early years on the family dairy farm in Eden, Utah where he attended Weber County High School, and later graduated from the University of Utah with a Masters Degree in Psychology. His work took him to Provo, Utah where he was a psychologist at the Utah State Mental Hospital and taught at Brigham Young University. In 1956 he moved his family to Santa Monica, California where he worked for Rand and System Development Corporations as a Systems Analyst and Project Manager. His assignments took him to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Washington DC. Lois and EJ returned to Santa Monica where he retired in 1987. On September 9, 1943 in Atlanta, Georgia, he married Lois Croft of Ogden, Utah, his sweetheart and wife of 64 years. It was apparent to all that knew them how much he treasured and adored her. They had four children who are very fortunate to have had such an exceptional role model and teacher to call "Dad". E.J. served in World War II as a Captain in the Army Air Corps. He flew P39s and P63s from Great Falls, Montana to Fairbanks, Alaska to be delivered to the Russians in what was called the LendLease Program. Nearly 8,000 military aircraft were flown to Alaska to help stop Hitler's advancing army. Later he was stationed in Jarhat, India, where he flew over the Himalayas, (The HUMP) to deliver high octane fuel to the Chinese. He is predeceased by his brothers Blake, Boyd, Harold, and his sister Lorraine Pearl. He is survived by his wife, Lois, his sister, Carol Lee Pilcher, and his four children, Jim Storey, Bob Storey (Pat), Jill Crumbo (Don), and Matt Storey (Carol). His grandchildren, Jenny Storey, Haley Crumbo, Jed Crumbo, Nathan Storey, Beth Storey, Nick Storey, and Patrick Storey will always be proud of "Pops". One of his favorite pastimes was spending time on his sailboat, the Biliken. He enjoyed numerous trips in the Santa Monica Bay, and jaunts to Catalina and the Channel Islands in California. He loved the ocean and was in his element when at the helm. He was an avid reader, and one of the original recreation runners, beginning his love of running in the mid 60s. Both he and Lois were regulars at their water exercise class at the YMCA. His greatest love was visiting his grandchildren, and he never tired of hearing of their activities and accomplishments. He will always be remembered by those who knew him for his humor, compassion, generosity, and gentle spirit. His life was full and his accomplishments many. He was true to himself and what he believed in. Services will be held at the Eden 1st Ward, 6450 E. 1900 No., Eden Utah on October 26, 2007 at 12:00 noon. Visitation with the family will be at 11 a.m. prior to the service, directed by Larkin & Sons Mortuary, Ogden. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Brain Institute at the University of Utah. Send gifts to the University of Utah Development Office, 540 Arapeen Dr. SLC, Utah 84108-1239.
