Paul registered for the draft October 16, 1940 in Linesville while he was working for the WPA in Linesville. At that time he was 5'7" tall and weighed 140# with brown eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion. He was drafted and served in the US Navy for one year. Not much more is known about his military career as he died before he was able to claim a pension.
Paul, his father and cousins did excavation work following the war. The pair and their relatives had dug almost all the major excavations and construction ditches in Linesville for many years. The crew was hired to dig the new sanitary sewer lines for the soon-to-be-built Alice Schafer Elementary School in Linesville. On August 22nd, 1949, the crew set to work digging the ditch on Water Street up to the school property. About 9 a.m. that day, they had finished digging the ditch and were in the process of setting up the cribbing planks when the ditch collapsed - burying Paul and his father. Paul's cousin, James Carnes just managed to escape; his father-in-law was also working that day but was 100 feet away when the accident happened. Paul's father died instantly, but Paul managed to survive until he was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m. that morning, shortly after being extricated.
Paul and his father were both buried in the cemetery on the same day, August 25, 1949. Paul was buried in Section U, Lot 555, Grave 7.
