George W. Brown, of Columbia, died on Sunday evening from infirmities of old age. Deceased was in his eighty-eighth year. He was born about two miles from Elizabethtown on May 20, 1825. He spent his early days on a farm and at the age of sixteen he learned shoemaking which he followed for fifteen years. He taught school for several years, worked on the canal and clerked in several Columbia stores. For a number of years he traveled for the Knowles Fish Company, of Boston, Mass. In 1854 he was married to Mrs. Anna Shissler May, at Bainbridge. Two children blessed the marriage, but one one, Ella A., wife of J. G. Detz, survives.
