Thelma was the daughter of Robert William White and Bertha Ficks. She was named after her mother's second cousin Thelma Ross, who was also her young godmother.* Thelma Ross was the daughter of Helen Dieffenbach. Thelma's middle name was the name her grandmother used in this country- Marie (Eisbrenner Ficks Hackbart).

Thelma was married to George Mesion Wolfinger. Their close family friends were Lawrence and Helen Bathurst. Thelma and George ('Shorty') were the parents of three sons who served in the United States military during the Vietnam War (all linked below). They were also the parents of two daughters (both living).

*Thelma's sister Bertha still had a photo of Thelma Ross in the early 2000's which had written on the back, "Thelma Ross, Thelma's godmother."
