Her son and daughter died at ages 10 and 8 of Tay-Sachs disease. She mourned terribly and never had any more children. Arden and Alta's toys and dolls were left in the attic for years and Mary would go up to grieve in private.
She never spoke of her loss to the many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews that considered her an important part of the family. Aunt Mary and Uncle Abe attended many holiday celebrations of their siblings' extended families. Every summer they hosted a picnic at their cottage on the Susquehanna River.
