Abe was the son of Ephraim Nissley Hershey and Anna Hoffman Engle. He was married to Mary Risser Horst on June 15 1920 in Lancaster County. Abe was the father of one son, Arden and one daughter, Alta, who both died from Tay-Sachs disease.

In his younger years Abe worked at Hershey Creamery where he was superintendent. He was also the owner of an ice cream emporium in Harrisburg and the manufacturer of Dutch Maid ice cream. Abe and his wife Mary owned a summer house on the Susquehanna River where they hosted an annual picnic for their nieces and nephews every summer.
